An antique finish is a surface treatment on solid metal. The recesses are darkened and the raised work is rubbed back to gold, so cut work and engraving read from across a room instead of disappearing into a bright polish.

It is done by hand, so how dark the recesses stay and how much gold shows on the high points differ from one piece to the next. The care is the part that matters. Lemon, salt and tamarind strip the dark straight out and leave the detail flat, so they are wrong here even though they are right for plain brass. A soft dry cloth on the raised metal is the whole routine.
