Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Count the corners and there are eight, a rectangle with each one cut back square. Figures sit cross legged in the panels round the wall, one of them under a many hooded serpent, and the relief stands so far proud of the metal that the wall behind it ripples. The lid is laid out differently, with overlapping petals in rings from a small rosette at the centre. A line of raised dots runs under the figures at the foot.

What is it?

A jewellery box is the lidded metal container that lives on a dressing table, sized to take rings, earrings and bangles and to keep them off the wood and out of a drawer.

Also known as a keepsake box, trinket box, peetal dabba or octagonal gift box.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass jewellery box with lid
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back on the raised surfaces: a soft dry cloth, and nothing more. The dark in the recesses is the finish, not dirt — lemon, salt and tamarind will strip it out and the pattern will flatten.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. At 1,500 g the walls have to be brass all the way through, and the relief on them is raised out of that same metal rather than stuck on. Weigh it the day it arrives.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No two come out the same. The figures are raised and dressed by hand, so their depth varies panel to panel, and the dark sits differently in the recesses of every box.

Will it mark what I keep inside?

Bare brass can print a faint dark mark on silver and on soft stones left resting against it. Keep pieces in pouches, or drop a felt square on the floor of the box first.

How big is it inside?

Not measured yet. The outside of a box in a photograph tells you very little about the inside, so rather than guess we will measure this one if you write before ordering.

What are the figures on the sides?

Seated figures, several armed, with one of them under a many hooded serpent canopy. We have not had the iconography read by anyone qualified to name them, so the relief is described rather than named.
