Estimated, not a guarantee. Dispatched from Guwahati, Monday to Saturday.

Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The head is worked oversize against a low, wide body, and the trunk swings out to the right and curls down, ending in a banded cuff over a rounded tip. Stone sits in bezelled cells all over the figure. A single line of it runs the length of the trunk, rosettes fill both ears, and rings of red, green and blue circle raised centre bosses on the body. The right palm turns out with an Om cut into it, and a second Om sits on the forehead between the eyes. Two small feet come out under the body. At 7,500 g, moving it is a two-handed job.

What is it?

A Ganesh murti is a cast figure of the elephant-headed deity, kept at the front of a home mandir, where the first offering of a pooja is made before the rest of the shrine.

Also known as a Ganpati murti, Vighnaharta idol, pital Ganesh statue or Ganesh ji ki murti.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass Ganesh murti
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back on the raised surfaces: a soft dry cloth, and nothing more. The dark in the recesses is the finish, not dirt — lemon, salt and tamarind will strip it out and the pattern will flatten.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. At 7,500 g nothing plated comes close, and a kitchen scale settles it the day the murti arrives. The stone is set into the metal rather than laid on top of it.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No two come out the same. The stone is set by hand, so the colours fall in a different order from one murti to the next, and the darkening in the recesses shifts with the finish.

How tall is it really?

We have not put a tape to it, so there is no height on this page and we will not print an estimate. The weight is the number we do have, and on a cast figure it tells you more than height does, because two murtis of the same height can differ by a kilo. If the height decides it, write to us and we will measure this one before you order.

Can I do abhishek on it?

We would keep it to a dry wipe. The stone sits in shallow cells and the maker has not yet confirmed how each one is held, so standing water at the edges is a risk worth avoiding until that is settled.

What are the coloured stones?

Coloured stone set into cells cut in the brass. They have not been identified and we will not put a name to them until the maker confirms it, so read them as colour rather than as a named stone.

Should I polish the dark out of the recesses?

No. The dark in the recesses is the antique finish, not dirt. Lemon, salt and tamarind strip it out and the cut work flattens. A soft dry cloth on the raised brass is the whole routine.

Will it stand level on a shelf?

It stands on two cast feet rather than a flat base, so it wants a hard level surface. On a cloth or a runner the feet sink unevenly and the figure leans.
