Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The two are cast as mirror images, meant to flank something. One head turns left, the other right, and set side by side the beaks lean in. Each bird stands on a plain brass disc, and above it the stem swells into a small pot form before the body begins. From there up, almost every surface carries stone, with round bezels down the neck and breast, squares along the folded wing, and a run of larger cabochons down the tail where it falls to the base. The turquoise and coral sit in raised collars, so a fingertip catches every one of them. Cast rather than pressed, the feather cuts stay as sharp in the recesses as on the high points.

What is it?

A peacock showpiece is a cast metal bird kept for the shape of the fanned tail, set on a shelf, a console or a mandir step where the spread of feathers reads from across the room.

Also known as a mor showpiece, mayur figurine, pital peacock pair or peacock statue set.

How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back on the raised surfaces: a soft dry cloth, and nothing more. The dark in the recesses is the finish, not dirt — lemon, salt and tamarind will strip it out and the pattern will flatten.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid, cast in two mirrored moulds. The pair comes in at 2,000 g, and a hollow plated bird of that height would be light enough to slide when you push it. A kitchen scale settles it.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The birds will match in form. The stone will not match cell for cell, because each cabochon is cut and seated by hand, so the run of colour down the tail differs between one pair and the next.

How big is it really?

We have not measured it, so the page carries no width or height. That is deliberate. An estimate a couple of centimetres out is worse than an honest gap, particularly for a piece going onto a shelf that is already full. The weight above is measured. Ask and we will put a tape to this one.

Will it tarnish?

The bright metal on the base discs will darken. The dark on the body is the antique finish and is meant to stay, so keep lemon, salt and tamarind off it or the pattern will flatten out.

How many do I need?

Two, and they are sold that way. The birds are mirrored, so one alone always looks as though the other has walked off. A second pair is only worth it on a long mandir step or mantel.

Will the stones fall out?

Each stone sits in a cast cell with a metal wall standing proud at its edge. Everyday dusting will not move them. A knock on the tail, where the cells are largest and least protected, is the real risk.

Can I light a diya in it?

No. We list it as a figure and not as a lamp. There is a small pot form cast into the middle of the stem, and we are checking with the maker whether it is an open well before saying anything about oil.
