Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The petal plate carries three chased rings, a band of beading inside a row of scalloped petals inside the outer points, and it stands high on cast scroll feet with curled toes. Two more scrolls arch in from the rim towards the oil cup, standing proud of the plate rather than lying on it.

What is it?

A lotus diya is an oil lamp whose plate or bowl is formed as open lotus petals, lit at the mandir or floated among flowers in a bowl of water at Diwali.

Also known as a kamal diya, kamal deep, padma diya, pital lotus lamp or lotus deep.

How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back on the raised surfaces: a soft dry cloth, and nothing more. The dark in the recesses is the finish, not dirt — lemon, salt and tamarind will strip it out and the pattern will flatten.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid cast brass at 400 g, most of it in the plate and the feet. The gold on the surface is a finish over that brass, and the recesses are left dark rather than filled with anything.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No two come out the same. The plate is cast and then chased by hand, so the beading and the petal rows shift a little, and the dark in the recesses sits differently on every piece.

Can I use ghee instead of oil?

Yes. The cup is small and shallow, so a spoon of ghee melts through within a minute of the wick catching and sets hard again as the lamp cools.

How do I clean it after pooja?

Wipe the cup out with a dry cloth while it is still warm. Keep lemon and salt off the plate, because the dark in the chasing is the finish and it will strip out and leave the pattern flat.
