Murtis finished antique, where the recesses are darkened and the raised metal is rubbed back to gold so the cut work reads at a distance. It is a surface treatment on solid metal, not a coating and not a plating, and no two pieces come out with the same contrast because the rubbing back is done by hand.

The care is the part worth reading. Lemon, salt and tamarind all strip the dark straight out and leave the engraving flat, so they are the wrong thing here even though they are right for plain brass. A soft dry cloth over the raised metal is the whole routine.
