Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Nandi carries the whole group on his back, standing on four legs with an anklet cast at each hoof and his tail curled up against the right flank. Shiva sits at the left with his hair coiled into a tall topknot, his right hand raised and his left arm resting along a trishul whose shaft runs the full height of the piece to the floor beside the bull. Parvati sits to the right, the child Ganesha between them with his own small trunk and crown, and a fourth figure at the far right holds a curved blade. Nandi's brow carries an engraved plate and a worked medallion sits on his shoulder.

What is it?

A Shiv Parivar murti sets Shiva, Parvati and their children in one casting, so the family is installed in a home mandir as a single group rather than as separate figures.

Also known as a Shiv Pariwar murti, Shiva family idol, pital Shiv murti or Shankar Parvati statue.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass Shiv Parivar murti
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back on the raised surfaces: a soft dry cloth, and nothing more. The dark in the recesses is the finish, not dirt — lemon, salt and tamarind will strip it out and the pattern will flatten.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. Six kilograms of cast brass in a group this size is what the number means, and a plated or filled piece would come in far under it. A kitchen scale settles the question on day one.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close, not identical. Each casting is cleaned and finished by hand, so the depth of the dark in the recesses and the crispness of Nandi's engraving move a little from one to the next.

How tall is it really?

No height here, because nobody has measured this casting yet, and a guess two centimetres out is worse than a blank. Go by the weight in the spec above; that is the figure that separates a solid murti from a light one. Ask us and we will put a tape to the piece and come back to you.

Can I do abhishek on it?

Bare brass takes water. Dry it straight after, particularly along Nandi's back and in the folds of the group, because water left standing in the cuts dries into pale spots against the darker finish.

Is the trishul a separate part?

It is cast with the piece. The shaft runs from Shiva's hand down past Nandi's shoulder to the floor and carries part of the weight, so nothing lifts out and nothing needs assembling.

Who is the fourth figure?

Kartikeya, at the right of the group. A Shiv Parivar is normally read as Shiva, Parvati, Ganesha and Kartikeya together, and the figure holds a curved blade in his raised hand.

Should I polish the dark out of the recesses?

No. The dark sitting in the recesses is the finish. Lemon, salt and tamarind lift it out and the engraving on Nandi and on the jewellery goes flat. Keep a soft dry cloth to the raised brass.
