Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The facets on the belly are small and cut square, close-packed enough that the surface breaks light into a grid rather than into rounds. The brim is flat and a finger wide, standing out all the way round the mouth, and it is what a wet hand grips. The tumbler over it is hammered to match, with a smooth polished band round its lower edge where it meets the brim, and it lifts straight off to drink from.

What is it?

A phool patra is the wide-mouthed round copper vessel kept in the house to store and serve drinking water, its mouth ringed by a flat brim and closed by a tumbler set over it upside down.

Also known as a phulpatra, tamba water vessel, wide mouth lota, storage lota or copper water pot.

How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge, then dry fully.
  • Copper darkens and takes a patina. Unlacquered copper reacts with air, water and skin. It is normal and it is reversible.
  • To restore the shine: lemon and salt, tamarind pulp, or a paste of flour, vinegar and salt. Rub, rinse, dry with a soft cloth.
  • Green or blue-green marks mean moisture has been sitting on the surface. Clean them off before use and dry the piece properly afterwards.
  • Keep sour and salty foods out of bare copper — lemon, curd, tamarind, pickle, vinegar.
  • For a drinking vessel: fill it overnight and finish it in the morning. Do not leave water standing for days.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.

Questions about this piece

Is this solid copper or plated?

Solid copper, not plated. The gram figure on the supplier's sheet came through a thousand times too large, so it is being reconfirmed rather than printed. A kitchen scale will settle it the day it arrives.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No. The facets are cut by hand and never fall the same way twice, on the pot or on the tumbler. The brim, the form and the way the tumbler sits over the neck are what stay the same.

Why has it gone dark?

Unlacquered copper darkens in air. The brim and the tumbler go first, because hands land there most. Half a lemon dipped in salt takes the colour back; left alone the tone keeps deepening.

Can I leave water in it overnight?

Yes. A wide-mouthed pot with a cover is made to stand full. Empty and rinse it before each refill rather than topping it up, and dry the inside every week or so.

How much does it hold?

No capacity on the page, because it has not been measured. A number reverse-engineered from a picture is a guess dressed up as a fact. If you need it before you buy, write to us and we will fill the piece and tell you what it takes.

Is the tumbler a separate piece?

Yes. It lifts straight off the brim and is a drinking tumbler in its own right, hammered to match the pot. Nothing screws or clips, so it will rattle if the pot is carried by the brim.
