Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Four hundred grams is light for a jug of this size, and it shows in the wall - the dimples are wide and shallow rather than driven deep. The handle is a round strap that stands well clear of the belly, so a full hand fits behind it. What the photograph gives away is the knob: it is brass, not copper, turned in three steps and set into the top of a copper lid.

What is it?

A jug is the handled water vessel brought to the table and left there, wide enough at the mouth to fill from a tap and drawn to a lip at the front so it pours into a glass without running down the outside.

Also known as a tamba jug, copper pitcher, jal patra, water jug or surahi.

What is in the box?
  • 1 copper jug
  • 1 copper lid with a brass knob
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge, then dry fully.
  • Copper darkens and takes a patina. Unlacquered copper reacts with air, water and skin. It is normal and it is reversible.
  • To restore the shine: lemon and salt, tamarind pulp, or a paste of flour, vinegar and salt. Rub, rinse, dry with a soft cloth.
  • Green or blue-green marks mean moisture has been sitting on the surface. Clean them off before use and dry the piece properly afterwards.
  • Keep sour and salty foods out of bare copper — lemon, curd, tamarind, pickle, vinegar.
  • For a drinking vessel: fill it overnight and finish it in the morning. Do not leave water standing for days.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.

Questions about this piece

Is this solid copper or plated?

Solid copper, with a brass knob on the lid. 400 g is light for a jug this size because the wall is thin, not because the metal is a coating, and a kitchen scale shows the same number printed above.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No. The dimples are struck by hand, so no two jugs carry the same pattern, and the brass knob varies in tone. The handle, the lip and the ridged lid are what stay constant.

Why has it gone dark?

Bare copper darkens in air, fastest at the handle where a hand grips it. Half a lemon dipped in salt, rubbed over and rinsed, brings it back. The brass knob will go its own way at its own rate.

Can I leave water in it overnight?

Yes, and the lid keeps dust off. Empty and rinse it in the morning rather than topping it up, and dry the inside now and then so no ring forms where the water line sat.

How much does it hold?

We have not measured the capacity, so there is no millilitre figure on this page. Where the maker gives one we print it; here they have not, and we are not going to work it back from a photograph. Ask before you order and we will fill this one and measure it.

Is the knob brass or copper?

Brass. The knob is turned separately and set into a copper lid, so it sits a shade yellower than the rest of the jug and it will not darken at the same rate as the copper does.
