Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Two hundred and fifty grams puts this one at the light end for a water pot, and the dimples say the same thing - wide, shallow and rolled rather than cut, laid in rings over a belly that is nearly a sphere. The brim is flat and dishes very slightly inward, so the tumbler stood on it settles into its own seat instead of sliding. Under the brim the neck is left smooth and bright.

What is it?

A phool patra is the squat wide-mouthed copper pot that holds a household's drinking water within reach, poured straight from the mouth and closed with a tumbler stood over it upside down.

Also known as a phulpatra, tamba jal patra, wide mouth lota, copper water pot or storage lota.

What is in the box?
  • 1 copper phool patra
  • 1 copper tumbler
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge, then dry fully.
  • Copper darkens and takes a patina. Unlacquered copper reacts with air, water and skin. It is normal and it is reversible.
  • To restore the shine: lemon and salt, tamarind pulp, or a paste of flour, vinegar and salt. Rub, rinse, dry with a soft cloth.
  • Green or blue-green marks mean moisture has been sitting on the surface. Clean them off before use and dry the piece properly afterwards.
  • Keep sour and salty foods out of bare copper — lemon, curd, tamarind, pickle, vinegar.
  • For a drinking vessel: fill it overnight and finish it in the morning. Do not leave water standing for days.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.

Questions about this piece

Is this solid copper or plated?

Solid. 250 g is thin-walled copper rather than a coating over another metal, and the number is the one to put on a kitchen scale the day the pot arrives.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No. The dimples are rolled in by hand and land differently on every pot and every tumbler. The brim, the round belly and the way the tumbler seats are what stay the same.

Why has it gone dark?

Unlacquered copper darkens in air, and the brim goes first because that is where hands land. Half a lemon dipped in salt brings the brightness back; left alone the tone keeps deepening.

Can I leave water in it overnight?

Yes. The tumbler on top keeps dust out. Empty and rinse the pot before each refill rather than topping it up, and dry the inside every week or so.

How much does it hold?

We have not measured the capacity, so there is no millilitre figure on this page. Where the maker gives one we print it; here they have not, and we are not going to work it back from a photograph. Ask before you order and we will fill this one and measure it.

How is it different from a lota?

A lota is the small round pot carried and poured from, drawn in at the mouth. A phool patra is wide at the mouth and made to stand, so it is filled and drunk from where it sits.
