Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The hammering is tight and square-cut rather than dimpled, small facets set edge to edge so the whole body reads as faceted metal instead of beaten sheet. It softens over the bottom third, where the marks flatten out and the taper widens into the base. The cap has a smooth polished top that reflects the room back at you, and it drops onto a raised collar, so it seats in one position rather than sliding about on the neck.

What is it?

A bedside tumbler is the small covered water vessel kept on a night table, filled once in the evening so a glass can be poured in the dark, with the cover turning over to serve as the glass.

Also known as a bedside carafe, tamba surahi set, night jar, copper water carafe or jal patra.

What is in the box?

  • 1 copper cap
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge, then dry fully.
  • Copper darkens and takes a patina. Unlacquered copper reacts with air, water and skin. It is normal and it is reversible.
  • To restore the shine: lemon and salt, tamarind pulp, or a paste of flour, vinegar and salt. Rub, rinse, dry with a soft cloth.
  • Green or blue-green marks mean moisture has been sitting on the surface. Clean them off before use and dry the piece properly afterwards.
  • Keep sour and salty foods out of bare copper — lemon, curd, tamarind, pickle, vinegar.
  • For a drinking vessel: fill it overnight and finish it in the morning. Do not leave water standing for days.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.

Questions about this piece

Is this solid copper or plated?

Solid. 500 g in a carafe this size is copper through the wall, not a coating over something cheaper. A kitchen scale on the day it arrives is the whole test.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No. The facets are struck one at a time, so the grid they make is never twice the same and the polish sits differently on each. The taper, the collar and the cap are what hold steady.

Why has it gone dark?

Unlacquered copper darkens in air and darkens faster where a hand holds it. Nothing is wrong. Half a lemon dipped in salt, rubbed over the metal and rinsed, takes it back to the tone in the photograph.

Can I leave water in it overnight?

Yes, that is what the covered form is for. Empty and rinse it in the morning rather than topping it up, and dry the inside now and then, because water left standing for days leaves a ring at the level it sat.

How much does it hold?

We have not measured the capacity, so there is no millilitre figure on this page. Where the maker gives one we print it; here they have not, and we are not going to work it back from a photograph. Ask before you order and we will fill this one and measure it.

Does the cap work as a glass?

It lifts off and turns over into a cup, which is what the covered form is built for. It is a shallow one, though, so expect a mouthful or two at a time rather than a full glass.
