Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The outline narrows to a tip at each end instead of closing in a curve, and the floor lifts as it runs out to those tips, so the deepest part of the dish is its middle. The underside is one continuous sweep with no foot under it, which means the two ends stand clear of the table and the dish rests on its centre. The edge is drawn thin the whole way round. The finish is matte, so the metal reads as a soft even gold rather than a mirror.

What is it?

A platter is the long open serving plate brought to the middle of a table with one dish on it, shallow enough to reach into and wide enough for several people to take from at once.

Also known as a bronze serving dish, kansya platter, oval thaal or bell metal serving boat.

What is in the box?
  • 1 kansa oval platter
How do I look after it?
  • Kansa is an alloy of copper and tin, known in English as bell metal or bronze. It is dense, hard, and heavier in the hand than steel of the same size.
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge straight after eating. Dry fully.
  • Kansa darkens with use and reacts to sour food faster than brass does. Serve lemon, curd, tamarind and pickle fresh rather than leaving them standing in the vessel.
  • To restore the shine: tamarind pulp, or lemon and salt. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
  • Do not use steel wool, harsh detergent or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • Kansa is hard but it is not forgiving — a fall onto stone can dent or crack the rim. Store it where it will not knock against other metal.

Questions about this piece

Is this kansa solid or plated?

Solid. A dish of this size weighing 700 g is metal through its section, and the drawn edge shows the same alloy end-on. A kitchen scale gives you the number at home.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No. The form is raised and finished by hand, so the sharpness of the two tips, the depth through the middle and the tone of the matte surface all shift from one dish to the next.

Is kansa the same as brass?

No. Kansa is bronze, copper alloyed with tin, and brass is copper alloyed with zinc. Kansa is harder and heavier for its size, and it carries a paler, cooler gold than brass.

Will it discolour with sour food?

Yes, in patches. Chutney, lemon and pickle mark the floor of the dish where they sit. Empty it after the meal, rinse and dry it, and the mark comes back out with normal cleaning.

Will it rock on the table?

A little, if you press one end. The underside is a single curve with no foot, so the dish rests on its middle. Load it evenly and it settles, or set it on a folded cloth.

What is it used for at a table?

Long food that suits a long dish. Kebabs, tikka, sliced fruit, papad and dry starters all sit well in it, and the shallow floor lets a serving spoon get under them cleanly.

Will it tarnish?

It will tone down, which unlacquered kansa does. Left alone it darkens slowly to a deeper gold. A cut lemon with salt, rinsed off at once and dried, takes it back to the lighter tone.
