Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The plate is one square of kansa with no rim standing on it. The four corners rise and the four sides dip between them, so the outline reads as a shallow curve from any angle and the plate meets the table only near its middle. The edge is drawn down thin, thin enough that the sheet shows end-on as a bright line. The surface is matte rather than mirrored and takes light in soft patches instead of a hard reflection, which keeps the eye on whatever is served on it.

What is it?

A platter is the large open serving plate that goes to the middle of the table holding one dish for several people to take from, rather than a portion set in front of one person.

Also known as a bronze serving plate, kansya platter, square thaal or bell metal serving tray.

What is in the box?
  • 1 kansa square platter
How do I look after it?
  • Kansa is an alloy of copper and tin, known in English as bell metal or bronze. It is dense, hard, and heavier in the hand than steel of the same size.
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge straight after eating. Dry fully.
  • Kansa darkens with use and reacts to sour food faster than brass does. Serve lemon, curd, tamarind and pickle fresh rather than leaving them standing in the vessel.
  • To restore the shine: tamarind pulp, or lemon and salt. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
  • Do not use steel wool, harsh detergent or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • Kansa is hard but it is not forgiving — a fall onto stone can dent or crack the rim. Store it where it will not knock against other metal.

Questions about this piece

Is this kansa solid or plated?

Solid. A sheet this size at 800 g has real thickness behind it, and the drawn edge shows the same metal end-on as the face. A kitchen scale confirms the figure at home.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No. The corners are lifted by hand, so the height of each one and the dip of the sides differ from plate to plate, and the matte surface reads warmer or cooler with the light.

Is kansa the same as brass?

No. Kansa is bronze, copper alloyed with tin, and brass is copper alloyed with zinc. Kansa is harder and denser, and its colour is a paler gold than brass under the same lamp.

Will it discolour with sour food?

Yes, in patches. Lemon, chutney and anything with tamarind mark the face where they sit. Serve on it, clear it, then rinse and dry, and the patch lifts with ordinary cleaning.

Will it sit flat on a table?

It rests near its centre, with the corners standing clear. Push down on one corner and the plate will move, so it suits a still table setting rather than a tray you carry loaded.

Why does the surface look cloudy?

The finish is matte, so it holds light in soft patches instead of a clean reflection. Kansa also tones down with time; a cut lemon with salt, rinsed off at once, brings it back.

Can I put hot food on it?

Yes, but the plate takes the heat of what sits on it and passes it to the table. Use a mat under it, and lift it with a cloth once a hot dish has been standing on the metal.
