Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The bowl sits straight on the table with no foot ring under it, so it settles into a cloth rather than standing on a rim. The wall is thin at the lip and thickens as it drops, and fine turning rings show on the inside floor where the light crosses them. The spoon is long enough to reach the bottom from outside the rim, with an oval bowl and a flat handle that widens and rounds off at the end.

What is it?

A serving bowl is the open bowl a whole dish comes to the table in, wide enough for a ladle to work in and deep enough that a dal or a gravy can be served out of it without running over the side.

Also known as a donga, bronze serving bowl, kansya katora, curry bowl or dal donga.

How do I look after it?
  • Kansa is an alloy of copper and tin, known in English as bell metal or bronze. It is dense, hard, and heavier in the hand than steel of the same size.
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge straight after eating. Dry fully.
  • Kansa darkens with use and reacts to sour food faster than brass does. Serve lemon, curd, tamarind and pickle fresh rather than leaving them standing in the vessel.
  • To restore the shine: tamarind pulp, or lemon and salt. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
  • Do not use steel wool, harsh detergent or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • Kansa is hard but it is not forgiving — a fall onto stone can dent or crack the rim. Store it where it will not knock against other metal.

Questions about this piece

Is this solid kansa or plated?

Solid. The bowl and the spoon are the same metal through and through, and 900 g in a bowl this wide is what a plated shell of the same size could not come near on a kitchen scale.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close, but not identical. The bowl is spun and finished by hand, so the turning rings inside and the depth of the satin outside are a little different on every one.

Is kansa the same as brass?

No. Kansa is an alloy of copper and tin while brass is copper and zinc, so they are two separate metals. Kansa is paler, and a bowl of it rings for several seconds when the rim is tapped.

Will it discolour with sour food?

Yes, if it is left to. A sour gravy, curd or a squeeze of lemon standing in the bowl will dull the inside and can mark it. Serve out of it, empty it at the end of the meal, then wash and dry it.

Does it sit steady when it is full?

It sits on a rounded base rather than a foot ring, so on a bare table it will rock slightly until something is in it. Full of dal it settles and stays put; on a cloth it is steady either way.

Can it go on the flame?

No. It is a serving bowl and the wall is thin at the lip, so direct heat is the wrong thing for it. Cook in your usual pan and bring the dish to the table in this.
