Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The handle is about the size of a small pestle. It runs from a rounded knob at the top down through a long waist and flares out again into a wide skirt, and the kansa dome is set into the underside of that skirt behind a bright collar, so only the curve of the metal ever meets anything. The dome is polished to a mirror where the handle is left a glossy dark brown. At 150 g the whole thing rests in one hand.

What is it?

A massage wand carries a small domed head of metal on a handle, so the dome rather than the fingers meets the skin, and the shape of the handle keeps a hand out of the oil while it is worked.

Also known as a kansa vati, bronze massager, kansya wand, foot massager or massage dome.

What is in the box?
  • 1 kansa massage wand
How do I look after it?
  • Kansa is an alloy of copper and tin, known in English as bell metal or bronze. It is dense, hard, and heavier in the hand than steel of the same size.
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge straight after eating. Dry fully.
  • Kansa darkens with use and reacts to sour food faster than brass does. Serve lemon, curd, tamarind and pickle fresh rather than leaving them standing in the vessel.
  • To restore the shine: tamarind pulp, or lemon and salt. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
  • Do not use steel wool, harsh detergent or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • Kansa is hard but it is not forgiving — a fall onto stone can dent or crack the rim. Store it where it will not knock against other metal.

Questions about this piece

Is this solid kansa or plated?

The dome is solid kansa and the handle is not metal at all, which is why the wand comes to 150 g rather than more. Put it on a scale and the number tells you how much of it is metal.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close. The dome is polished to a mirror so it picks up whatever is in front of it, and the handle is turned one at a time, so its colour and the exact sweep of the waist shift a little.

Is kansa the same as brass?

No. Kansa is an alloy of copper and tin and brass is copper and zinc, so the two are different metals with different colours. Kansa takes and holds the mirror polish you can see on the dome.

Will it discolour with sour food?

It is not a food piece, but kansa reacts the same way wherever it is used. Anything sour will dull the mirror, and so will oil left standing on it. Wipe the dome dry after every use.

What is the handle made of?

It photographs as a dark polished turning and reads as hardwood, but the listing does not say and we have not confirmed it, so the material row above names the dome and leaves the handle open.

How do I clean the dome after oil?

Warm water and a soft cloth, then dry it straight away. No steel wool and no scouring powder, because both will scratch a mirror surface and it does not come back once it is cut.
