Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Three pieces sit in cut-outs in a lined box. The wand is the largest of them, a hardwood handle turned with a bulb at one end and a long waist, ending in a kansa dome collared into the wood. The comb is a broad plate with wide slotted teeth and a small stamped mark above them. The third piece is a flat plate with one curved edge and a notch cut into the other, sized to be held in the palm.

What is it?

A massage wand is a domed disc of metal set on a handle, worked over the skin during a massage in the way it has long been used in Indian households, with the handle keeping the hand clear of the oil.

Also known as a kansa vati, bronze massage wand, kansya wand, face massager or foot massager.

How do I look after it?
  • Kansa is an alloy of copper and tin, known in English as bell metal or bronze. It is dense, hard, and heavier in the hand than steel of the same size.
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge straight after eating. Dry fully.
  • Kansa darkens with use and reacts to sour food faster than brass does. Serve lemon, curd, tamarind and pickle fresh rather than leaving them standing in the vessel.
  • To restore the shine: tamarind pulp, or lemon and salt. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
  • Do not use steel wool, harsh detergent or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • Kansa is hard but it is not forgiving — a fall onto stone can dent or crack the rim. Store it where it will not knock against other metal.

Questions about this piece

Is this solid kansa or plated?

Solid. The dome, the comb and the plate are the metal itself, and the set comes to 350 g with a wooden handle in it, so the metal is carrying most of that figure.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close on the metal, less so on the wood. Every handle is turned from a different piece of timber, so the grain and the depth of the brown change from one wand to the next.

Is kansa the same as brass?

No. Kansa is an alloy of copper and tin and brass is copper and zinc. Kansa is the metal these tools have long been made from in India, and it takes a brighter polish than brass holds.

Will it discolour with sour food?

None of the three pieces is a food item, but the metal behaves the same way. Anything sour will dull it, and so will oil and sweat left on it. Wipe each piece dry after use and the colour holds.

How many do I need?

One kit covers one person. The wand, the comb and the plate are three different tools rather than three sizes of one, so a second kit only earns its place if two people want their own.

Is the handle wood or plastic?

Wood, turned and polished, with the kansa dome collared into the end of it. We have not been told the species yet, which is why the wood row above is left open rather than guessed at.
