Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The hammering is kept to two bands. One runs under the cap, one wraps the foot, and between them the body is left plain and brushed, pinched into a shallow waist so a hand finds a grip. A fine beaded line marks where the hammered metal stops. The cap is the full width of the neck.

Technique

  • Hand Hammered
What is it?

A bottle in copper is a lidded flask for carrying and storing drinking water, filled at the tap and closed at the neck so that it travels upright in a bag rather than open on a shelf.

Also known as a copper water bottle, tamba bottle, jal patra or copper flask.

What is in the box?
  • 1 hammered copper bottle with cap
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge, then dry fully.
  • Copper darkens and takes a patina. Unlacquered copper reacts with air, water and skin. It is normal and it is reversible.
  • To restore the shine: lemon and salt, tamarind pulp, or a paste of flour, vinegar and salt. Rub, rinse, dry with a soft cloth.
  • Green or blue-green marks mean moisture has been sitting on the surface. Clean them off before use and dry the piece properly afterwards.
  • Keep sour and salty foods out of bare copper — lemon, curd, tamarind, pickle, vinegar.
  • For a drinking vessel: fill it overnight and finish it in the morning. Do not leave water standing for days.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
How was it made?

Questions about this piece

Is this solid copper or plated?

Solid. The bottle weighs 350 g empty, which is the weight of copper sheet rather than a coating over steel, and a magnet will not hold to it at any point.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close, but the two hammered bands are struck by hand, so the facets sit at different widths and the beaded line between them will not fall at exactly the same height on yours.

Why has it gone dark?

Copper darkens in air, and the hammered bands go first because the recesses hold what the cloth misses. Lemon and salt lift it back to pink; leave it and the patina deepens instead.

Can I leave water in it overnight?

Yes, the metal takes no harm from it, and Indian households have stored water in copper for a very long time. Empty and dry the bottle in the morning rather than topping it up.

How much does it hold?

We have not measured the capacity, so there is no millilitre figure on this page. Where the maker gives one we print it; here they have not, and we are not going to work it back from a photograph. Ask before you order and we will fill this one and measure it.
