Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Two fine beaded rings run round the polished neck, close together, the sort of detail rolled in with a wheel that stops a smooth band from reading as blank. Below them the dimples start, rounded and wide, in vertical courses down a body that keeps widening to the base, so the carafe is bottom-heavy and hard to knock over in the dark. The lid is a proper cup with a rolled rim, not a cap.

  • Hand Hammered
What is it?

A bedside tumbler is the covered carafe left on a night table with a single filling of water, its cover made deep enough to turn over and be drunk from, so no second glass is needed.

Also known as a bedside water set, tamba carafe with lid, night jar, surahi set or copper carafe.

What is in the box?
  • 1 copper bedside carafe
  • 1 copper cup lid
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge, then dry fully.
  • Copper darkens and takes a patina. Unlacquered copper reacts with air, water and skin. It is normal and it is reversible.
  • To restore the shine: lemon and salt, tamarind pulp, or a paste of flour, vinegar and salt. Rub, rinse, dry with a soft cloth.
  • Green or blue-green marks mean moisture has been sitting on the surface. Clean them off before use and dry the piece properly afterwards.
  • Keep sour and salty foods out of bare copper — lemon, curd, tamarind, pickle, vinegar.
  • For a drinking vessel: fill it overnight and finish it in the morning. Do not leave water standing for days.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.

Questions about this piece

Is this solid copper or plated?

Solid copper, not plated. The gram figure on the supplier's sheet is out by a factor of a thousand, so it is being reconfirmed rather than printed. A kitchen scale will settle it the day it arrives.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No. The dimples are struck by hand and fall differently on every carafe. The beaded rings, the taper and the cup lid are the parts that hold constant from one to the next.

Why has it gone dark?

Unlacquered copper darkens in air, and the beaded rings hold the dark longest because a cloth skips over them. Lemon and salt lifts it off the smooth metal; a soft brush gets into the beading.

Can I leave water in it overnight?

Yes, that is the form's whole job. Fill it in the evening, empty and rinse in the morning rather than topping it up, and let the inside dry open every few days.

How much does it hold?

Unmeasured, so unprinted. The weight above is the figure we can stand behind. Capacity we would have to measure, and we will if you ask before ordering.

Does the cup hold a full glass?

It is a cup rather than a cap, straight-sided with a rolled rim, so it holds a real drink and not just a sip. The exact figure waits on the capacity row, which nobody has measured yet.
