Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The facets are small and squared off, laid in vertical courses that run the full height of the cylinder, and the polish over them is high enough that the bottle reads as a column of broken light rather than as a dimpled surface. The cap is left smooth, and it stands a shade proud of the body, so the seam between the two is a clean horizontal line a thumb can find in the dark.

Technique

  • Hand Hammered
What is it?

A copper bottle is the lidded flask carried for drinking water, drawn straight-sided so it stands in a bag pocket, with a screw cap at the neck rather than a stopper or a cork.

Also known as a copper water bottle, tamba bottle, jal patra, copper flask or water flask.

What is in the box?
  • 1 copper bottle with its screw cap
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge, then dry fully.
  • Copper darkens and takes a patina. Unlacquered copper reacts with air, water and skin. It is normal and it is reversible.
  • To restore the shine: lemon and salt, tamarind pulp, or a paste of flour, vinegar and salt. Rub, rinse, dry with a soft cloth.
  • Green or blue-green marks mean moisture has been sitting on the surface. Clean them off before use and dry the piece properly afterwards.
  • Keep sour and salty foods out of bare copper — lemon, curd, tamarind, pickle, vinegar.
  • For a drinking vessel: fill it overnight and finish it in the morning. Do not leave water standing for days.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
How was it made?
  • Hand Hammered

Questions about this piece

Is this solid copper or plated?

Solid copper, not plated. The gram figure on the supplier's sheet is wrong by a factor of a thousand, so it is being reconfirmed rather than printed. Put the bottle on a kitchen scale and the question answers itself.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No. Each facet is struck by hand, so the grid running up the body sits differently on every bottle and the polish catches the light its own way. The form and the cap are what stay constant.

Why has it gone dark?

Bare copper darkens in air, and a bottle darkens fastest where a hand grips it. Half a lemon dipped in salt, rubbed over the metal and rinsed off, brings the colour back whenever you want it back.

Can I leave water in it overnight?

Yes. Water can stand in it overnight and the cap keeps dust out. Empty and rinse in the morning rather than refilling on top of yesterday, and let the inside dry open now and then.

How much does it hold?

No capacity on the page, because it has not been measured. A number reverse-engineered from a picture is a guess dressed up as a fact. If you need it before you buy, write to us and we will fill the piece and tell you what it takes.

Does the cap seal well enough for a bag?

The cap screws down onto a threaded neck, which holds better than a push fit. No gasket shows in the photograph and it has not been tested on its side, so carry it upright until you have tried it over a sink.
