Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The whole thing is turned on a lathe and nothing on it is cast. Rings and knops step down the stem in a run that reads as one continuous cut, and the foot rolls out to a plain domed skirt that keeps 200 g low. Above the pan the stem carries on and finishes in a long tapered spike. The pan is set halfway up rather than at the top, so the spike stands clear of a flame.

What is it?

A standing diya is a floor or table oil lamp built on a weighted foot, so the pan holding the oil and the wicks sits at a height instead of resting flat on the ground.

Also known as a samai, kuthu vilakku, nilavilakku, pital deepam or standing oil lamp.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass standing diya
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid throughout, and unplated. At 200 g the weight sits in the foot and the stem, and the turning rings are cut into the metal rather than pressed into a coating over it.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close. The turning is cut one lamp at a time, so the depth of each ring and the run of the knops shift a little, and the brass starts to darken from the day it is unwrapped.

Can I use ghee instead of oil?

Yes. Ghee sets solid in the pan once the flame goes out and has to be warmed before the next lighting, which is the only real difference. Wipe the pan out before it is stored either way.

How do I clean it after pooja?

Let the pan cool, lift the old wick out and wipe the oil off with a dry cloth. Once a month, lemon and salt on the stem and the foot brings the brass back, then rinse and dry it.

How many wicks does the pan take?

One in each petal point on the rim. The points at the back of the pan are hidden in the photograph, so the number is left open above rather than guessed at.
