Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The plate is an eight-point star with the petal outlines cut into it in shallow concentric lines, and the points are thick enough that they do not lift when a hand presses one. At the centre sits a solid teardrop boss, drilled through near its foot so a stick leans out over the plate and the ash drops on brass.

What is it?

An agarbatti stand is the tray and holder an incense stick is set into while it burns, angled so the stick stands clear of the surface and the ash falls on metal rather than on the shelf.

Also known as an incense holder, agarbatti holder, dhoop stand, incense stick tray or pital agarbatti stand.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass agarbatti stand
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. The boss is cast solid rather than hollow, which is where most of the 500 g goes, and the star plate has enough metal in it to sit still under a burning stick.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close. The plate is cast and the lines are cut into it one piece at a time, so the star points and the petal outlines vary a little, and the brass darkens from the day it is unwrapped.

Is this the same as a dhoop dani?

No. A dhoop dani is the lidded vessel loban or resin is burned in over coals. An agarbatti stand takes a stick, holds it at an angle and catches the ash on an open plate.

How do I clean it after pooja?

Tip the ash off and wipe the plate with a dry cloth. Ash left sitting draws moisture and marks the brass, so it comes off after each stick rather than at the end of the week.
