Estimated, not a guarantee. Dispatched from Guwahati, Monday to Saturday.

Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Each of the three plaques is cut as a scrolled cross with foliate arms rather than as a plain square. The top two carry raised lettering inside a beaded frame, the pair of words set either side of a doorway at Diwali; the lowest carries a swastik. Two bells hang from crescent hooks on the arms of every plaque, and a seventh drops from the bottom ring on its own.

What is it?

A hanging bell string is the run of small bells fixed at a doorway or over a mandir arch, sounded on the way in so the household hears the rite begin.

Also known as hanging ghanti, a door bell string, temple bells, ghungroo bells or pital ghanti.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass hanging bell string with seven bells
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back on the raised surfaces: a soft dry cloth, and nothing more. The dark in the recesses is the finish, not dirt — lemon, salt and tamarind will strip it out and the pattern will flatten.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid cast brass across the plaques, the rings and the seven bells, at 750 g for the string. The dark in the scrollwork is the antique finish, not a lacquer sitting on top of it.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No. Each plaque and each bell is cast and finished by hand, so the depth of the scrollwork and the tone of the darkening move from one string to the next.

What does the lettering say?

The top two plaques carry the pair of words traditionally set either side of a doorway at Diwali, cast in raised relief. The third plaque carries a swastik instead of lettering.

How do I clean it after pooja?

A dry cloth, nothing wet. The scrollwork holds the dark that gives the plaques their depth, and lemon, salt or tamarind lifts it straight out and leaves the pattern flat.

Where should it be hung?

At the mandir arch or on the inside of the main door, high enough that the bells clear a head and low enough that a hand reaches the lowest one on the way past.
