Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Six hundred grams is what the maker records, and for a jug that is a light number. It puts this one in the class of vessel a hand lifts full and pours from without bracing the other hand under the base, rather than the class that gets set down in the middle of the table and left there. The brass is bare, so it will darken on an open table and come back with lemon and salt.

What is it?

A jug is the open-topped pouring vessel that stands on the table through a meal, with a handle on one side and a lip drawn out on the other so water goes into a glass without a funnel or a ladle.

Also known as a jal patra, water jug, peetal jug, everyday pitcher or table jug.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass jug
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. 600 g is a real weight for a table jug of this kind, and it is the number to check on a kitchen scale the day it arrives rather than taking our word for it.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The image currently on this page is shared with another jug in the range and is being replaced. Treat it as a placeholder rather than as a picture of what will arrive, and wait for the reshoot.

Is it tin lined?

No, bare brass inside with nothing between the water and the metal. That is fine for plain water over a few hours. Empty it rather than leaving it standing full overnight, and keep nimbu pani and chaas out of it.

Can I keep curd, lemon or pickle in it?

No. Chaas and nimbu pani both sit sour against bare brass and will pick up a metallic edge from it. Plain water, poured and emptied, is what a bare brass jug is for.

Can I put it in the dishwasher?

Hand wash only. Dishwasher salts strip the shine off brass and leave it grey and blotchy. Warm water, a soft sponge, then dry it inside and out before it goes back on the shelf.

Does it come with a lid?

The listing does not say and the jug has not been photographed on its own, so we will not tell you either way. The answer goes on this page the day the maker confirms it.
