Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The engraving covers the whole body. A floral scroll runs from the plain band above the foot up to a plain band under the flare, and the two glasses do not carry the same stretch of it, so the flowers sit at different heights on each.

What is it?

A glass is the plain tapered drinking vessel of the Indian table, no handle and no stem, set beside the thali through the meal.

Also known as a peetal glass, water glass, drinking tumbler or pital glass.

How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. 500 g for two glasses is a heavy gauge for the size, and the pattern is cut into the wall, so there is no plating to wear off the high points where a hand holds it.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close, but not identical. The two in the frame already differ from each other, because the scroll is worked glass by glass and does not begin at the same point on both.

Is it tin lined?

No. This is bare brass inside. Keep sour food - lemon, curd, tamarind, pickle - out of it, and serve rather than store.

Can I keep nimbu pani or curd in it?

Plain water and milk are fine. Nimbu pani and chaas are both sour enough to pull at bare brass, so pour them, drink them and rinse the glass out rather than letting either stand.

Can these go in the dishwasher?

No. The floral scroll runs from foot to lip on both glasses, and machine detergent dries white in every cut of it. Wash them by hand with a soft sponge and dry them at once.

How many do I need?

One per person at the table. Sold as a pair, so a family of four takes two sets, and most households keep a spare pair back for guests rather than counting to the last glass.
