Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Two bands of relief do the decorating. One rings the waist of the cup, a row of small figures held between beaded ropes above and below, and the second repeats on the collar of the foot. Everything else is polished to a mirror.

What is it?

A footed glass is a drinking glass raised on a stem and base, taller in the hand than a plain tumbler and steadier on a cloth.

Also known as a peetal goblet, footed tumbler, water goblet or pital glass.

How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. 350 g for a pair of footed glasses is light, but the relief bands stand proud of the wall and show brass in the cut, which a plated shell would not do at the edges.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close, but not identical. The relief band is finished by hand, so the figures are crisper on some glasses than on others and the mirror takes differently over the raised work.

Is it tin lined?

No. This is bare brass inside. Keep sour food - lemon, curd, tamarind, pickle - out of it, and serve rather than store.

Can I keep nimbu pani or curd in it?

Water and milk sit in it without trouble. Lemon water or chaas left standing in bare brass will dull the inside and take on a metallic edge, so rinse the glass out once it is empty.

Can these go in the dishwasher?

No. The relief band at the waist and the one on the foot collar are full of undercuts that hold detergent and dry chalky. Hand wash, then dry into the raised work with a cloth.

How many do I need?

One per person. The pair is a place setting for two rather than a serving set, and a table that seats six needs three sets to match all the way down.
