Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The pattern runs in one band, a course of scallop shells set among leaves and scrollwork that circles the belly and stops at a polished collar above and a plain drum below. The same work wraps the spreading foot, with a beaded rope line at its edge and another round the cover. The handle is cast rather than bent from strip, with a scrolled leaf at the top for the thumb and a small tail where it meets the body.

What is it?

A jug is the handled table vessel with a lip drawn out at one side, filled once and left standing so water is poured for the whole table without anyone getting up.

Also known as a water pitcher, jal patra, peetal jug, serving jug or table carafe.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass jug
  • 1 domed brass cover
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. 1,200 g is a lot of metal for a table jug, and most of it is in the cast handle and the spreading foot, neither of which a plated shell could carry without buckling at the joint.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close, but not identical. The relief band is finished by hand and the polish is worked in stages, so the depth of the shells and the brightness of the plain drum below them vary jug to jug.

Is it tin lined?

No, it is unlined. Water stands in bare brass for a few hours without trouble. Nimbu pani and chaas do not - they are sour enough to pull at the metal and taste of it.

Can I keep curd, lemon or pickle in it?

No. Nimbu pani and chaas both sit sour against bare brass, and the relief band gives a wet cloth nowhere to get at the inside. Keep it to plain water at the table.

Can I put it in the dishwasher?

Hand wash only. Dishwasher salts strip the shine off brass and leave it grey, and the shells and scrollwork hold detergent in their hollows. Soft brush, rinse, then dry it fully.

Is the band raised or engraved?

Raised. The shells and leaves stand proud of the surface rather than being cut into it. Whether the relief was pushed out from the reverse or cast in is still being confirmed with the maker.
