Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

There is no pattern on it at all. A single turned step runs right round the wall a finger below the rim, and above that step the brass is bright while below it the wall is left brushed with fine lathe rings.

What is it?

A serving bowl is the deep round bowl a dish comes to the table in, filled once and spooned out by everyone at the meal.

Also known as a donga, katora, curry bowl or peetal bowl.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass serving bowl
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. 300 g in a bowl this deep is spun sheet with body in it, and the turned step is cut into the wall on a lathe rather than pressed into a skin over some other metal.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close, but not identical. The bowl is spun and polished by hand, so the height of the turned step and the depth of the mirror inside shift from one bowl to the next.

Is it tin lined?

No, bare brass inside. It will hold a dry sabzi or a dal for the length of a meal. Curd, sambhar and anything with tamarind in it should go in steel.

Can I keep curd, lemon or pickle in it?

Serve them, do not store them. Sour food in bare brass takes on a metallic edge within a few hours and leaves a dull patch on the floor of the bowl that has to be polished out.

Can I put it in the dishwasher?

No. A machine cycle leaves the mirror inside grey and streaked, which is the whole point of this bowl. Wash it by hand with a mild liquid and dry it with a cloth straight away.
