Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Five bowls lie face down in the frame and one stands open, which is the only way to see that the inside is plain. The wall outside carries a band of blooms worked in relief on a punched dot ground, with a running border above the foot, and inside there is nothing but turned, polished brass. Each bowl stands on a narrow plain foot ring, and the underside of the base shows the concentric rings the lathe left.

What is it?

A katori is the small deep bowl of an Indian place setting, lifted off the thali to drink the last of a dal from and refilled at the table rather than being carried back out to the kitchen.

Also known as a vati, katora, curd bowl, peetal katori or small dal bowl.

What is in the box?
  • 6 brass katori
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. Sheet brass through the wall and the base, and 500 g across six bowls is a number you can settle on a kitchen scale rather than take from a listing.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No two bowls match exactly, inside a set or between sets. The relief is struck by hand, so the border sits closer to the foot on some bowls than others and the polish reads warmer on some.

Is it tin lined?

No lining, plain brass. Serve out of them and wash them when the meal ends rather than leaving food to stand, and they will not stain.

Can I keep curd, lemon or pickle in it?

Serve them, do not store them. Curd through a meal is fine, curd left in the bowl on the counter is not, because sour food sitting on bare brass marks it and picks up a taste from it.

Can I put it in the dishwasher?

Hand wash only. Dishwasher salts leave brass grey and blotchy, and detergent dries white in the recesses of the relief. Warm water, a soft sponge, then dry each bowl before it is stacked.

How many do I need?

Two to three per person at a full meal, one for dal, one for sabzi and a third for curd. Six is a place setting for two, or for three if only two wet dishes go on the table.
