Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Both bowls are the same size, which is what makes the pair work at a table set for two. The wall runs straight down from a rim turned out almost flat, and the floral band cut into the lower half is left matte where the rest is polished.

What is it?

A katori is the small metal bowl that carries the wet part of an Indian meal, one for dal and one for a sabzi.

Also known as a vati, dal katori, curd bowl or pital katori.

How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. 500 g for the pair is sheet brass with weight behind it, and a plated bowl of the same width would ring thin the moment a spoon touched the side of it.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close, but not identical. The band on the wall is worked bowl by bowl, so its height and the point where the pattern closes shift a little between one katori and the next.

Is it tin lined?

No. This is bare brass inside. Keep sour food - lemon, curd, tamarind, pickle - out of it, and serve rather than store.

Can I keep curd, lemon or pickle in it?

Serve them, do not store them. A katori of curd through a meal is fine, but left standing overnight it will mark bare brass and take a metallic edge from it.

Can these go in the dishwasher?

No. Hand wash with a mild liquid and a soft sponge, and dry both bowls before they are put away. A machine cycle takes the shine off brass and whitens the band cut into the wall.

How many do I need?

Count one katori per wet dish per person. Two is a place setting for one with a dal and a sabzi, so four people at a full meal usually want six to eight between them.
