Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The disc on the left is a ring of pointed petals worked in two bands enclosing a raised centre boss, and the shankh on the right is a smooth spiral whorl set in the same flame-shaped surround. Between them the namah rises plain and unworked, three prongs off one foot, the outer two flicking outward at the tips. The base dips in a shallow curve along its top edge and stands on four stub corner feet.

What is it?

The shankh, sudarshan and namah are the three emblems of Vishnu, the conch, the discus and the upright name-mark, set out together in a mandir where the emblems stand in place of a figure of the deity.

Also known as a shankh sudarshan, vishnu symbols, vaishnav tilak set or pital vishnu emblems.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass shankh, sudarshan and namah on a base
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid, and cast rather than pressed. The three emblems and the base together come to 800 g, so a kitchen scale settles it on the day the parcel arrives. A plated shell this size would weigh a fraction of that.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Not exactly. Each one is cast and then filed and polished by hand, so the depth of the petal work on the disc and the amount of dark left in the recesses shift a little from one to the next.

Is this the same as a shankh you can blow?

No. The conch here is a solid cast emblem in relief, made to be looked at. A blowing shankh is a hollow shell with the tip cut open, and it is sold as its own object.

How do I clean it after pooja?

A dry cloth over the base once the offerings are cleared. If ghee or roli has dried into the petal work on the disc, warm water and an old toothbrush lift it out, and then dry the piece fully.

Do the three emblems lift off the base?

We are checking that with the maker before stating it. What the photograph shows is each emblem standing on the base on its own small feet, which is not enough to tell a cast joint from a set one.
