Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The right foot rests on the left knee and the left hand closes over the ankle, while the right hand comes up with the palm out. The kafni is punched all over with a fine dotted texture and closed down the front with round buttons. The rock under him is cut into facets, and it sits on an oval plate.

What is it?

A Sai Baba murti holds the posture the saint is remembered in, seated on a rock with one leg crossed over the other knee and the right palm turned out, a form kept in home shrines and on shop counters alike.

Also known as a Sainath murti, Sai Baba idol, Sai ji ki murti or peetal Sai Baba statue.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass Sai Baba murti
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid cast brass. A hollow plated figure of the same height would weigh a fraction of 450 g, so a kitchen scale on the day it arrives is a better answer than anything printed on a box.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close. The dotted texture on the robe is punched by hand, so its density varies across the surface and from one murti to the next, and the polish sits differently in the facets of the rock.

How tall is it really?

Not measured, so not printed. A murti is the easiest thing in this trade to misjudge from a photograph, which is exactly why we are not going to estimate it from one. The weight above was measured. Tell us the shelf it is going on and we will measure the piece and answer.

Can I do abhishek on it?

Better not. The punched robe and the faceted rock hold water in thousands of small pits, and unlacquered brass left wet there goes dark unevenly. Wipe the murti dry after pooja instead.
