Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The bowl and the bird come as one piece with two finishes. Inside the bowl the metal is turned smooth and bright enough to hold a reflection, while the bird is left as it came from the mould, every feather scale cut in and nothing polished back. The tail leaves the peacock's back as one flat fan and lies out to the side, level with the table, where it works as a rest and keeps the bowl from tipping when you drop keys into it.

What is it?

A decorative bowl is the small open dish kept out for keys, rings or a few flower heads in water, made as much for the shape of the thing holding them as for what goes in.

Also known as a mor bowl, mayur showpiece dish, pital peacock bowl, key bowl or trinket dish.

What is in the box?
  • 1 cast brass peacock bowl
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid, cast in one piece at 1,200 g. Most of that weight sits in the bowl wall and the tail plate, and a plated shell of the same span would tip the moment you dropped a set of keys in it.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Form and finish will match. The bowl in the photograph shows the faint rings a turned brass surface picks up and the mottling bare brass takes with time, and yours will carry its own.

How big is it really?

No dimensions yet, because none have been taken. The weight is the measured figure we can stand behind, and on a cast or raised piece it is a fair guide to bulk. If size is the thing that decides it, write to us and we will measure it before you order.

Will it tarnish?

Yes. The polished bowl darkens fastest because it is the surface you touch, and it shows fingerprints within days. The cast bird holds its colour for longer. A dry cloth on the bowl, nothing on the bird.

Can I keep water in the bowl?

Not standing water. A few flower heads floated for an evening will not hurt it if you empty and dry the bowl the same night. Water left in bare brass leaves a ring that has to be polished out.

Will it sit steady?

Yes, and the tail is doing that job. It leaves the bird's back as a flat plate and lies on the table beside the bowl, which spreads the footprint wide enough that the weight of the peacock cannot tip it backwards.
