Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The dish is a single leaf, with one long point at the far end, a raised midrib down the middle and veins cut out to a wavy edge. The peacock is cast at the other end, neck up and crest showing, and its fanned tail does not lie inside the tray at all. It spreads outside the rim over the near corner, and the feather tips drop to the table, so the whole piece stands on short cast feet rather than flat on its underside.

What is it?

A decorative tray is the shallow open dish kept out on a table for keys, incense or a few sweets, made to be looked at when it is empty as much as when it is full.

Also known as a mayur tray, mor leaf dish, pital serving tray, peacock platter or decorative thali.

What is in the box?

How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back on the raised surfaces: a soft dry cloth, and nothing more. The dark in the recesses is the finish, not dirt — lemon, salt and tamarind will strip it out and the pattern will flatten.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid, cast as one piece at 1,600 g. Lift it by the peacock's neck and the whole tray comes with it without flexing, which a pressed and plated dish would not do.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Cast pieces vary. The leaf and the bird will be the same, but the antique finish sits differently in the veins on every tray, so yours may read warmer or greyer than the one shown.

How big is it really?

No dimensions yet, because none have been taken. The weight is the measured figure we can stand behind, and on a cast or raised piece it is a fair guide to bulk. If size is the thing that decides it, write to us and we will measure it before you order.

Will it tarnish?

The bright edges will darken. The dark in the veins and the tail is the antique finish and is meant to stay, so keep lemon, salt and tamarind away from it or the pattern goes flat.

Can I serve food on it?

Dry food only, and on a leaf or a paper. There is no tin lining here, and anything oily or sour pulls at both the bare metal and the finish in the recesses. Keys, incense and dry sweets are the honest uses.

Does it sit flat on a table?

It stands on short cast feet, not on the underside of the leaf, so there is a small gap beneath the dish. On a hard table it can rock a little if one foot is proud, and on cloth it settles.
