Estimated, not a guarantee. Dispatched from Guwahati, Monday to Saturday.

Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Three faces read from the front, the monkey at the centre, one turned hard left and a snouted head right, and each wears a crown of its own, so the top is a row of cones rather than one head. The arms come out in two fans, a bow and a kalash on one side, a trishul and an axe on the other, with the centre pair folded at the chest. The oval base is latticed on top inside a rim of stamped florets.

What is it?

Panchmukhi Hanuman is the five-faced form, the monkey face at the centre flanked by the lion, the eagle, the boar and the horse, each turned a different way, with the arms fanned out behind and a weapon in each.

Also known as a panchmukhi hanuman idol, five faced bajrangbali, panchmukhi anjaneya or pital hanuman murti.

What is in the box?

How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid, and light with it. 250 g is the whole murti and base together, because the weapons and the outer arms stand clear of the body and take almost no metal each.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The faces will. The fine work moves. Each weapon is filed by hand after the pour, so the axe head and the trishul prongs come up crisper on some castings than on others.

How tall is it really?

No height here, because nobody has measured this casting yet, and a guess two centimetres out is worse than a blank. Go by the weight in the spec above; that is the figure that separates a solid murti from a light one. Ask us and we will put a tape to the piece and come back to you.

Can I do abhishek on it?

Bare brass takes water. The base is the problem, not the figure, because the lattice holds a droplet in every hole and there are gaps between all ten arms. Tip it, then dry it out.

Can I see all five faces?

Three face the front and the rest turn to the side and the back, so no single view shows every one. Turn the murti in your hands rather than expecting one photograph to cover it.
