Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The ring is pierced right through in a lattice, with cast flame tongues standing off its outer edge, and it meets the base at two points only, so the figure inside is framed by open air. Four arms come out of the shoulders, one crossing the body to point at the raised foot, and the matted hair fans out flat on both sides of the head. The right foot presses down on a small figure lying face down on the lotus pad.

What is it?

Natraj is Shiva as the dancer, one leg lifted across the body and a ring of flame set behind the figure, and the form is kept as often on a desk or a shelf as it is in a mandir.

Also known as a Nataraja murti, dancing Shiva idol, pital Natraj statue or Nataraj showpiece.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass Natraj murti
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. At 1,400 g for a piece this open it is cast metal throughout, ring included. A plated shell would flex under thumb pressure at the flame tips and this does not move at all.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The mould is the same. The cleaning up is not. The flame tips are filed by hand after casting, so their length and angle vary a little, and the polish can read warmer on one piece than another.

How tall is it really?

Not measured, so not printed. A murti is the easiest thing in this trade to misjudge from a photograph, which is exactly why we are not going to estimate it from one. The weight above was measured. Tell us the shelf it is going on and we will measure the piece and answer.

Can I do abhishek on it?

Bare brass takes water, but the ring makes drying slow. Water sits in the lattice openings and at the two points where the ring meets the base, so tip it and get a dry cloth in before it marks.

Is the ring separate from the figure?

It is one casting. The ring is joined to the base at two points and to nothing else, so the arms and the raised leg stand clear inside it and nothing lifts apart or needs aligning.

Who is the figure under the foot?

A small figure lies face down under the right foot, named Apasmara in this form. It is cast as part of the lotus pad rather than added on, and it is what the dancer is standing on.
