Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The thali is not a flat plate. Its wall stands almost upright for a good finger of depth and finishes in a thin rolled edge, so a dal that gets knocked slides down the wall rather than over it. The two katori are true hemispheres and the third bowl is wider and shallower, cut for a sabzi rather than for a liquid. The spoon has a round bowl and a flat handle that widens to a rounded tip.

What is it?

A thali set is the metal place setting an Indian meal is laid out on, the rimmed plate taking the roti and the dry dishes while the bowls beside it hold dal, sabzi and curd so nothing runs together.

Also known as a bhojan thali set, kansa dinner set, bell metal thali or kansya thali.

How do I look after it?
  • Kansa is an alloy of copper and tin, known in English as bell metal or bronze. It is dense, hard, and heavier in the hand than steel of the same size.
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge straight after eating. Dry fully.
  • Kansa darkens with use and reacts to sour food faster than brass does. Serve lemon, curd, tamarind and pickle fresh rather than leaving them standing in the vessel.
  • To restore the shine: tamarind pulp, or lemon and salt. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
  • Do not use steel wool, harsh detergent or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • Kansa is hard but it is not forgiving — a fall onto stone can dent or crack the rim. Store it where it will not knock against other metal.

Questions about this piece

Is this solid kansa or plated?

Solid. Six pieces coming to 1,500 g is metal all the way through the wall, and a plated set of the same width would ring thin the moment a katori was set down on the thali.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close, but not identical. Each piece is spun and finished by hand, so the depth of the satin and the exact curve of a bowl shift a little between one set and the next.

Is kansa the same as brass?

No. Kansa is an alloy of copper and tin, the metal Indian households have long eaten from, while brass is copper and zinc. Kansa is the paler of the two and holds a warmer, softer colour under a satin finish.

Will it discolour with sour food?

It can. Curd, lemon, tamarind and pickle left standing in a katori will dull the surface and mark it. Serve them and empty the bowls at the end of the meal, then wash and dry every piece.

How many do I need?

One set is one place setting rather than a serving set. A table of four takes four, and a household that puts three wet dishes out adds a katori per person on top of the two supplied.

Is the spoon kansa as well?

It photographs as the same metal at the same satin finish, and it is supplied with the set rather than sourced separately. If a steel spoon ever arrives in a set, that is a fault and not a substitution we make.
