Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The plate is wide and close to flat, with only a low turned-up edge to hold anything runny, so a meal spreads out over the floor instead of sitting down in a well. Both katoris are deep and round-bottomed. The third bowl is a shallow oval, low enough to reach into with a spoon. The glass flares from a stepped ring at its foot up to a wide mouth, so it stands on a smaller circle than it drinks from. The spoon has a rounded bowl and a flat handle that tapers to a squared-off end.

What is it?

A thali set is one person's place setting, the plate and the katoris, glass and spoon that sit on it. Kansa is bronze, an alloy of copper and tin, long worked in India into vessels people eat from.

Also known as a bronze thali set, kansa dinner set, kansya bhojan thali or bell metal dinner set.

How do I look after it?
  • Kansa is an alloy of copper and tin, known in English as bell metal or bronze. It is dense, hard, and heavier in the hand than steel of the same size.
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge straight after eating. Dry fully.
  • Kansa darkens with use and reacts to sour food faster than brass does. Serve lemon, curd, tamarind and pickle fresh rather than leaving them standing in the vessel.
  • To restore the shine: tamarind pulp, or lemon and salt. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
  • Do not use steel wool, harsh detergent or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • Kansa is hard but it is not forgiving — a fall onto stone can dent or crack the rim. Store it where it will not knock against other metal.

Questions about this piece

Is this kansa solid or plated?

Solid. The six pieces come to 1,500 g on the scale, and plating over a lighter metal would not reach that number, so weighing the set at home answers the question in a minute.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No. The plate is spun and finished by hand, so the width of the turned-up edge, the flare of the glass and the tone of the satin all move a little from one set to the next.

Is kansa the same as brass?

No. Kansa is bronze, copper alloyed with tin, and brass is copper alloyed with zinc. The two look close in a photograph, but kansa is denser for its size and reads paler and cooler in daylight.

Will it discolour with sour food?

Yes, in patches. Curd, lemon, tamarind and pickle mark the surface where they sit. Empty the plate, rinse it and dry it soon after a meal, and the patch lifts with ordinary cleaning.

How many do I need?

One per person eating. The six pieces make a single place setting rather than a set for the whole table, so most households buy in fours or sixes and add serving bowls on top.

Can I put it in the dishwasher?

Hand wash only. Dishwasher salt and long heat leave kansa dull and streaked. Warm water and a soft sponge, then a dry cloth before the pieces go back into the cupboard.

Will dal stay on a flat thali?

A thick dal will. The turned-up edge is low, so anything runny belongs in one of the katoris and the plate takes the rice, roti and dry sabzi that sit still on their own.
