Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Each tumbler travels upside down inside its own dabara. The bowl is shallow, its rim running out flat and wide enough to hold with a thumb and finger while the coffee cools. Small chevrons over rows of dots circle each bowl.

What is it?

A filter coffee set is the wide-lipped brass bowl and the tapered tumbler that go together, the decoction poured between the two until it cools.

Also known as a dabara set, davara tumbler, kaapi set or peetal coffee glass.

How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. 300 g across four thin-walled pieces is what brass sheet weighs at this size, and the pattern band is worked into the wall rather than printed onto a coating.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close, but not identical. The pattern band is struck a little differently on each bowl, and the brushed brass will warm and darken from the day the set is unwrapped.

Is it tin lined?

No, there is no lining in the filter or the tumblers. Pour the coffee out instead of letting it stand in the brass and the inside keeps its colour far longer.

Can I keep curd, lemon or pickle in it?

No, and nothing sour should sit in the tumbler either. Coffee and milk are what it is built for; lemon or curd left standing in bare brass takes on a metallic edge and dulls the wall.

Can these go in the dishwasher?

No. Four thin-walled pieces in a machine rack will knock against each other and come out dulled, so wash them by hand with a mild liquid and dry them before they are stacked away.

How many do I need?

One set serves two people, one dabara and one tumbler each. A household that drinks coffee four at a time needs two sets, because the tumbler is small by design.
