Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Hammering runs from the foot to the shoulder in tight rows of small dimples and stops where the metal turns in to a plain polished collar. The lid is a hammered dome on a plain rim, with a turned brass top on a waisted stem. The spout climbs from low on the body in a long S and finishes in a pinched, upturned lip. The bail handle swings on two riveted lugs and lies flat on the shoulder when nothing is lifting the pot.

Technique

  • Hand Hammered
What is it?

A tea pot is the lidded spouted vessel chai is brewed in and poured from, sized for a household rather than for a cup, with the spout set low on the body so the pot pours down to the last of it.

Also known as a ketli, chai kettle, chai dani, teapot or peetal kettle.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass tea pot with lid
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.
How was it made?
  • Hand Hammered

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. At 400 g the pot is light in the hand for its size, which is what thin raised sheet feels like, and the hammer marks are struck into the metal rather than pressed into a coating.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

No two come out the same. The dimples are struck by hand, so their pattern and spacing shift from one pot to the next, and the spout is set on by eye rather than to a jig.

Is it tin lined?

No lining, bare brass inside. Tea is mildly sour, so pour the pot out rather than letting it stand full, and rinse it while it is still warm.

Can I keep curd, lemon or pickle in it?

No, and nothing sour should sit in it either. A slice of lemon left in a bare brass pot overnight will mark the wall and put a metallic edge into the next brew you make in it.

Can I put it in the dishwasher?

Hand wash only. Dishwasher salts dull the brass and the spout traps water where it joins the body. Rinse it out warm, wipe the outside, and stand it upside down so the spout drains.

How much chai does it hold?

The listing calls it a 600 ml pot. We have not put it under a jug ourselves, so read that as the maker's figure rather than one we have checked, and ask us if the exact volume matters.
