Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Two metals, and the join between them is a plain brass collar that rings the neck of each box. Below it the copper is hammered in short flat facets that run in rows and break for one smooth polished band at the widest point of the belly. Above it the brass lid is faceted the same way and finished with a ball knob on a short stem. Each box stands on a small turned foot, so the belly clears the table.

What is it?

A supari box is the small lidded pot that comes out at the end of a meal, holding supari, saunf or elaichi so the mukhwas is passed round the table in its own container rather than on a saucer.

Also known as a mukhwas box, supari dabbi, tamba supari dabba, betel nut box or paandan.

What is in the box?
  • 2 hammered copper supari boxes
  • 2 domed brass lids
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge, then dry fully.
  • Copper darkens and takes a patina. Unlacquered copper reacts with air, water and skin. It is normal and it is reversible.
  • To restore the shine: lemon and salt, tamarind pulp, or a paste of flour, vinegar and salt. Rub, rinse, dry with a soft cloth.
  • Green or blue-green marks mean moisture has been sitting on the surface. Clean them off before use and dry the piece properly afterwards.
  • Keep sour and salty foods out of bare copper — lemon, curd, tamarind, pickle, vinegar.
  • For a drinking vessel: fill it overnight and finish it in the morning. Do not leave water standing for days.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • The brass base and fittings clean the same way — lemon and salt, then dry.

Questions about this piece

Is this solid copper or plated?

Solid. The bodies are copper through the wall and the lids and collars are brass, which is why the two metals hold clearly different colours in the photograph instead of matching each other.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close, but not identical. The facets are struck by hand and the two metals age at different rates, so the copper will warm and darken before the brass does and no pair is marked alike.

Is it tin lined?

No. Both boxes are plain copper inside with nothing over the metal, which is how a supari box is normally made. Keep dry supari, saunf and elaichi in them and nothing wet.

Can I keep curd, lemon or pickle in it?

No. Copper and anything sour work on each other, and the boxes are unlined. Dry mukhwas only, and wipe the inside out before each refill so nothing damp is left sitting in a corner.

Can I put it in the dishwasher?

Hand wash only. Copper goes dull and blotchy in a dishwasher and the hammered facets trap detergent in their hollows. Lemon and salt, a rinse, then dry it straight away.

How many do I need?

The pair covers a table of four to six, with saunf in one box and supari or elaichi in the other. A second pair only earns its place if you serve mukhwas in two rooms.
