Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The body swells below the rim and draws back in at the base, and the hammer work is kept to the lower third, stopping where the curve turns under. Above the hammering the metal is brushed smooth. A raised collar runs just under the lip, thick enough to feel against the mouth, and neither one carries a handle.

Technique

  • Hand Hammered
What is it?

A barrel tumbler swells at the waist and draws in again at the rim and the foot, so the cup sits in the palm rather than being held between the fingers.

Also known as a copper mug, tamba tumbler, moscow mule mug, barrel glass or water tumbler.

How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge, then dry fully.
  • Copper darkens and takes a patina. Unlacquered copper reacts with air, water and skin. It is normal and it is reversible.
  • To restore the shine: lemon and salt, tamarind pulp, or a paste of flour, vinegar and salt. Rub, rinse, dry with a soft cloth.
  • Green or blue-green marks mean moisture has been sitting on the surface. Clean them off before use and dry the piece properly afterwards.
  • Keep sour and salty foods out of bare copper — lemon, curd, tamarind, pickle, vinegar.
  • For a drinking vessel: fill it overnight and finish it in the morning. Do not leave water standing for days.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
How was it made?

Questions about this piece

Is this solid copper or plated?

Solid. The pair weighs 250 g, and the hammered band at the foot pushes the metal in far enough that the marks can be felt from the inside with a fingertip.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The barrel form and the collar under the lip are the same every time. Where the hammered band stops varies by a few millimetres, because the line is struck by eye.

Why has it gone dark?

Copper darkens in air. On this form the brushed upper half shows it first and most evenly, while the hammered band below goes patchy. Lemon and salt take both back to pink.

Can I leave water in it overnight?

Water sits in copper without harming the metal and Indian households have kept it that way for generations. Empty and dry the cup in the morning before the next fill.

How much does it hold?

No capacity on the page, because it has not been measured. A number reverse-engineered from a picture is a guess dressed up as a fact. If you need it before you buy, write to us and we will fill the piece and tell you what it takes.

How many do I need?

One per person drinking. Two is the usual bedside or coffee-table pair, and a household that entertains generally wants four so nobody is handed a different cup.
