Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Each one is a straight-sided beaker, barely tapered, with the hammer work held between two rows of beading rolled into the metal. Above the top row the rim is left plain and turned out a little. Below the bottom row the wall runs smooth into a small pressed foot that lifts the base clear of the table.

What is it?

A tumbler is the plain drinking cup of an Indian table, straight sided and open at the top, filled from a jug or a bottle and set down at each place rather than passed hand to hand.

Also known as a copper glass, tamba tumbler, water glass or beaded copper glass.

How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge, then dry fully.
  • Copper darkens and takes a patina. Unlacquered copper reacts with air, water and skin. It is normal and it is reversible.
  • To restore the shine: lemon and salt, tamarind pulp, or a paste of flour, vinegar and salt. Rub, rinse, dry with a soft cloth.
  • Green or blue-green marks mean moisture has been sitting on the surface. Clean them off before use and dry the piece properly afterwards.
  • Keep sour and salty foods out of bare copper — lemon, curd, tamarind, pickle, vinegar.
  • For a drinking vessel: fill it overnight and finish it in the morning. Do not leave water standing for days.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.

Questions about this piece

Is this solid copper or plated?

Solid. Look inside and the hammer marks show through as a rippled wall, which only happens when the metal itself has been moved rather than a pattern pressed into a coating.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The two beaded rows sit at the same height on every one, because they are rolled in. The hammering between them is struck by hand and will differ, even between the two in one box.

Why has it gone dark?

Copper darkens in air, and the beaded rows go darkest because a cloth skips over the low ground between the beads. Lemon and salt with a soft brush get into them.

Can I leave water in it overnight?

Water standing in copper is long-standing Indian household practice and does the metal no harm. Rinse and dry the tumbler in the morning rather than pouring fresh water on top.

How much does it hold?

We have not measured the capacity, so there is no millilitre figure on this page. Where the maker gives one we print it; here they have not, and we are not going to work it back from a photograph. Ask before you order and we will fill this one and measure it.

How many do I need?

One per person drinking. Two covers a bedside jug and a guest; a table that seats four or six wants the matching count so the setting reads as one thing.
