Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Nothing on the surface has been struck. The belly is drawn into wide vertical lobes that run from the shoulder to the foot, and the whole pot carries a fine brushed grain running the same way, so light moves down the flutes in soft bands instead of breaking up. Where a hammered pot scatters a reflection, this one holds it in long strips and lets it slide as you walk past. A raised rib rings the shoulder and the lid sits on the step above it, ridged in concentric turns and finished with a tall waisted knob. The tap is set at the foot, low enough that the last of the water comes out without the pot being tipped.

What is it?

A water dispenser is the lidded storage pot that sits on a kitchen counter with a tap fitted through its lower wall, so a glass is filled where it stands instead of the pot being carried to the table.

Also known as a copper matka, tamba water drum, jal patra, storage matka or water pot with tap.

What is in the box?
  • 1 copper water dispenser with fitted tap
  • 1 copper lid
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge, then dry fully.
  • Copper darkens and takes a patina. Unlacquered copper reacts with air, water and skin. It is normal and it is reversible.
  • To restore the shine: lemon and salt, tamarind pulp, or a paste of flour, vinegar and salt. Rub, rinse, dry with a soft cloth.
  • Green or blue-green marks mean moisture has been sitting on the surface. Clean them off before use and dry the piece properly afterwards.
  • Keep sour and salty foods out of bare copper — lemon, curd, tamarind, pickle, vinegar.
  • For a drinking vessel: fill it overnight and finish it in the morning. Do not leave water standing for days.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.

Questions about this piece

Is this solid copper or plated?

Solid. A thousand grams of copper in a pot this size is metal all the way through, and a plated shell would come in far under that. A kitchen scale settles it in a second.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The flutes and the brushed grain are drawn on a lathe, so the form repeats closely from one pot to the next. Colour is the part that moves - copper varies batch to batch, and it starts to darken as soon as it is out of the box.

Why has it gone dark?

Unlacquered copper darkens in air. The brushed finish takes it evenly, so the tone goes deeper rather than blotchy. Lemon and salt brings it back if you want it bright; left alone it keeps going darker.

Can I leave water in it overnight?

Yes. Fill it, lid it, and draw off through the tap. Empty and rinse the pot before each refill rather than topping it up, and wipe the inside dry every week or so.

How much does it hold?

No capacity on the page, because it has not been measured. A number reverse-engineered from a picture is a guess dressed up as a fact. If you need it before you buy, write to us and we will fill the piece and tell you what it takes.

Is the surface hammered?

No. The body is drawn into vertical flutes and finished with a fine brushed grain, and nothing on the surface has been struck. What runs down the belly is the shaping, not hammer marks.

Will the brushed finish scratch?

It marks more readily than a polished surface, because the grain sits shallow. A soft cloth and a light hand keep it even. A scouring pad cuts across the grain and leaves a bright patch that stays visible.
