Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The body is a straight-sided drum rather than a belly, so it takes up less counter than its height suggests and slides back against a wall without the shoulder catching. The brushed grain runs vertically from base to neck and picks up handling marks - there are two already on the front of the pot in the frame, small and dark, and they will multiply. The lid climbs in three stepped rings to a short knob and lifts off whole; nothing on it hinges. At the tap a grey washer shows between the spout collar and the wall, which is the part that keeps the joint dry and the part that will eventually want replacing.

What is it?

A water dispenser keeps the day's drinking water on a counter under a lid, with a tap through the lower wall so a glass is filled without the pot being tipped or a jug being carried across the room.

Also known as a copper drum, tamba matka, jal patra, counter top water pot or matka with tap.

What is in the box?
  • 1 copper water dispenser with fitted tap
  • 1 copper lid
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge, then dry fully.
  • Copper darkens and takes a patina. Unlacquered copper reacts with air, water and skin. It is normal and it is reversible.
  • To restore the shine: lemon and salt, tamarind pulp, or a paste of flour, vinegar and salt. Rub, rinse, dry with a soft cloth.
  • Green or blue-green marks mean moisture has been sitting on the surface. Clean them off before use and dry the piece properly afterwards.
  • Keep sour and salty foods out of bare copper — lemon, curd, tamarind, pickle, vinegar.
  • For a drinking vessel: fill it overnight and finish it in the morning. Do not leave water standing for days.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.

Questions about this piece

Is this solid copper or plated?

Solid copper, not plated. The gram figure that would let you check it on a kitchen scale came through the supplier's sheet as zero, which is a data fault, so it is being confirmed rather than guessed at.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The form is turned, so it repeats closely. The surface does not: the brushed grain picks up handling marks, and the pot in the frame already carries two small dark ones on the front. Yours will collect its own.

Why has it gone dark?

Copper left unlacquered darkens as it meets air, and the brushed grain shows it a little sooner than a polished surface would. Lemon and salt lifts it off; leaving it alone lets the patina settle. Both are fine.

Can I leave water in it overnight?

Yes, that is the whole point of a lidded pot with a tap. Run it down and refill rather than topping up a half-full pot, and give the inside a wipe and a dry every week or so.

How much does it hold?

No capacity on the page, because it has not been measured. A number reverse-engineered from a picture is a guess dressed up as a fact. If you need it before you buy, write to us and we will fill the piece and tell you what it takes.

How heavy is it?

We do not have a weight for this one. The supplier's sheet returned zero grams, which is missing data rather than a reading, so the weight row stays off the page until the pot has been on a scale. Every other page on this site carries the figure; this one will once it is weighed.

How do I clean inside it?

Half a lemon dipped in salt on a soft cloth, worked over the inside, then a long rinse and a dry with a towel. Run clean water through the tap after every wash so nothing sits in the spout.
