Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

Nothing on the surface is worked. The body is a straight cylinder that rolls into a shoulder and then a short neck, and the whole of it carries the fine vertical brush lines left by the polishing wheel. The cap is a plain sleeve that drops over a raised collar, with no thread showing outside it.

What is it?

A copper bottle carries and stores drinking water in one lidded vessel, tall and narrow rather than bellied, so it stands upright in a fridge door or a bag pocket instead of lying flat.

Also known as a copper water bottle, tamba bottle, jal patra or plain water flask.

What is in the box?
  • 1 plain copper bottle with cap
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge, then dry fully.
  • Copper darkens and takes a patina. Unlacquered copper reacts with air, water and skin. It is normal and it is reversible.
  • To restore the shine: lemon and salt, tamarind pulp, or a paste of flour, vinegar and salt. Rub, rinse, dry with a soft cloth.
  • Green or blue-green marks mean moisture has been sitting on the surface. Clean them off before use and dry the piece properly afterwards.
  • Keep sour and salty foods out of bare copper — lemon, curd, tamarind, pickle, vinegar.
  • For a drinking vessel: fill it overnight and finish it in the morning. Do not leave water standing for days.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.

Questions about this piece

Is this solid copper or plated?

Solid. The bottle weighs 250 g empty and the metal is the same copper right through, which is why the inside of the neck reads the same colour as the outside of the body.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

A plain bottle shows every variation the metal has, so the brush lines and the depth of the pink will differ a little. The form and the collar are the same on every one.

Why has it gone dark?

Copper darkens in air, and a plain polished surface shows the change more plainly than a worked one because there is no pattern to break it up. Lemon and salt take it back to pink.

Can I leave water in it overnight?

The metal takes no harm from it and Indian kitchens have stored water in copper for generations. Pour it out in the morning and dry the inside rather than refilling on top of it.

How much does it hold?

Unmeasured, so unprinted. The weight above is the figure we can stand behind. Capacity we would have to measure, and we will if you ask before ordering.
