Estimated, not a guarantee. Dispatched from Guwahati, Monday to Saturday.

Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The relief runs as one deep band that stops dead where the wall turns up into a plain polished collar, so the top third of the bowl throws light and the lower two thirds hold shadow. Each flower in the band is a fan of five petals pushed proud of a stippled ground. The foot is a separate turned piece, a ribbed knop above a ring of fine flutes that widen into a stepped base.

What is it?

A pedestal bowl is an open bowl raised on a stemmed foot, so the mouth stands clear of the table and what sits inside it, whether fruit, flowers or water with floating wicks, is held up to be seen.

Also known as a katora, footed fruit bowl, decorative bowl, centrepiece bowl or peetal bowl.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass pedestal bowl
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. A plated shell in this size would weigh a fraction of 500 g, so put it on a kitchen scale the day it arrives and the number answers the question for you better than we can.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close, not identical. The relief band is struck into each bowl separately, so the flowers land at slightly different heights, and the polish on the collar varies from one piece to the next.

How big is it really?

No dimensions yet, because none have been taken. The weight is the measured figure we can stand behind, and on a cast or raised piece it is a fair guide to bulk. If size is the thing that decides it, write to us and we will measure it before you order.

Will it tarnish?

Yes. Unlacquered brass darkens, and it darkens first in the stippled ground between the flowers where a cloth cannot reach. Wipe the collar and rim, and let the recesses go dark if you like the depth.

Can I fill it with water and flowers?

Yes, and empty it the same day. Water standing in bare brass leaves a ring at the waterline that takes work to lift, so float the flowers in the morning and pour it out at night.
