Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The rim is the whole design. The neck runs up straight and breaks into a ring of soft waves, each dished so the metal turns over like a petal. Below it the neck carries three bands of short chisel dashes between ruled lines, tight at the top and looser lower down. The body is a plump bulb, engraved over the shoulder with open flowers and leaves and left plain and bright below, where a narrow ring foot lifts it clear of the table.

What is it?

A flower vase is the upright vessel that holds cut stems in water, narrow through the neck so the stems stay gathered and wide at the base so the weight sits low.

Also known as a guldasta, phooldan, pital flower vase, engraved bud vase or table vase.

How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. A thousand grams in a vase this size means a thick wall rather than plate over a shell. Stand it on a kitchen scale the day it arrives and the number is the whole argument.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The engraved bands and the body shape will match. The petal rim is turned out by hand, so the waves are never identical from vase to vase and yours will have its own rhythm.

How big is it really?

We have not measured it, so the page carries no width or height. That is deliberate. An estimate a couple of centimetres out is worse than an honest gap, particularly for a piece going onto a shelf that is already full. The weight above is measured. Ask and we will put a tape to this one.

Will it tarnish?

Yes. Unlacquered brass darkens in room air, and the engraved dashes on the neck darken first because a cloth skims over them. Weekly dusting keeps it bright, or leave it and let it go honey brown.

Can I put water in it?

Use a liner. Water left standing in bare brass marks the inside wall and the mark eventually shows at the mouth. A glass tube or a small plastic bottle inside holds the stems and keeps the metal dry.

Is the rim sharp?

The waves are turned over and finished smooth at the edge rather than left as a cut line. Run a finger along it when it arrives, and if any point feels raw, tell us rather than filing it yourself.
