Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The foot is turned in stepped rings that get wider as they drop, and the stem above it pulls in thin before the belly swells out. Engraving covers the belly in a run of long leaves with combed veins, held between banded borders top and bottom, and the neck carries its own narrow bands above a raised collar. The mouth opens into a frill with a wavy cut edge, so the flare is not a plain circle.

What is it?

Engraving on a vase is line cut into the surface with a graver rather than printed on it, so the pattern is a shallow trench in the metal and the brightness comes from the fresh cut.

Also known as a guldasta, phooldan, engraved flower vase, corner vase or peetal vase.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass vase
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. It weighs 800 g and the stepped foot holds most of that, which is what keeps a tall narrow vase upright when a stem leans out over the lip.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

Close. Every line on the leaf band is cut by hand, so the veins run at slightly different angles and the borders do not meet exactly where they close at the back.

How big is it really?

Not yet measured, and we would rather say so than estimate. A screen flattens scale badly, and a small piece and a large one photograph much the same. The weight above is real. Tell us the space you are filling and we will measure the piece and tell you whether it fits.

Will it tarnish?

Yes. Bare brass darkens, and the engraved lines go first because a cloth skates over them. That is what makes the leaf band read from across a room after a year.

How deep is the engraving?

Shallow. It is line cut with a graver, a trench you can feel with a nail rather than relief you can see from the side, and the brightness comes from the fresh cut edge.

Can I put water in it?

Use a liner or a jar. The neck is narrow and the belly is wide, so anything that dries inside is hard to reach and a water line will set itself on the brass.
