Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The body is a plain tapered cylinder with no shoulder and no neck, set on a domed foot that steps out to a ring at the table. The pattern is bitten into the surface in fine lines and then packed with colour, so the design reads dark against the metal while the wall stays flat to a fingertip. The brass is brushed rather than mirrored, which keeps the colour from being lost in reflection.

What is it?

A pedestal vase carries its body on a separate foot, so the weight sits low and wide and a tall stem can stand upright in it without the vase going over.

Also known as a guldasta, phooldan, pedestal vase, flower vase or peetal guldasta.

What is in the box?
  • 1 brass vase
How do I look after it?
  • Wash by hand with a mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Dry fully with a cloth before putting it away — water left standing is what causes spotting.
  • Brass darkens. It reacts with air and with the oils on your hands, and a piece in daily use will dull within weeks. That is the metal telling you it is not plated.
  • To bring the shine back: a paste of lemon juice and salt, or tamarind pulp, or a proprietary brass cleaner. Rub, rinse, dry. Two minutes.
  • Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or bleach.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • If you would rather it stayed dark, leave it alone — a settled patina protects the surface.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid. The vase weighs 400 g, thin walled and spun rather than cast, and the foot carries most of that. The colour is filled into the surface, not plated over it.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The form will. The colour is packed into the etched lines by hand, so its depth varies and small gaps where the metal shows through are normal on every one of them.

How big is it really?

No dimensions yet, because none have been taken. The weight is the measured figure we can stand behind, and on a cast or raised piece it is a fair guide to bulk. If size is the thing that decides it, write to us and we will measure it before you order.

Will it tarnish?

Yes, on the plain brushed areas and on the foot. A satin surface goes warmer rather than blotchy, and a dry cloth is all it needs. Polish will drag colour out of the lines.

Can I put water in it?

Use a liner. Water in bare brass leaves a ring, and anything running down the outside sits in the filled lines and lifts the colour out of them over time.
