Each piece is shaped and finished by hand, so small differences in weight, size, finish and surface marking are normal and no two are identical. Colour on screen can differ from the metal in daylight. Handmade in India.

The painting stops at the waist. Inside, a black ground carries gold scrolling stems with leaves picked out in pink, peach, blue and white, and the flowers follow the rim in a band. Outside, the metal is left plain and polished down to a low turned footring, so the bowl reads as bare brass until you look into it. The rim is cut into small scallops and every point is gilded, which makes the edge read as a row of fine teeth from above.

What is it?

A decorative bowl is made to be looked at rather than eaten from, shallow enough to sit open on a table, and finished on the face that shows, which is why the work often stops where the eye stops.

Also known as a katora, decorative bowl, accent bowl, painted fruit bowl or peetal katora.

What is in the box?
  • 1 hand painted brass bowl
How do I look after it?
  • Wipe with a soft dry cloth. For marks, a barely damp cloth and nothing else. Dry it straight away.
  • The colour is a surface layer over the metal. Lemon, salt, tamarind and brass polish all lift it — the same things that bring bare brass back to a shine will take the pattern off this piece. Keep them away from the painted areas.
  • Any bare brass on the foot, rim or underside can be cleaned the normal way with lemon and salt. Work around the colour, not over it.
  • Do not soak it, do not scrub it, and keep steel wool and scouring pads away from it entirely.
  • Not dishwasher safe. Not microwave safe.
  • Keep it out of long direct sunlight. Applied colour fades where bare brass would only darken.

Questions about this piece

Is this brass solid or plated?

Solid metal under the paint, which is why the outside can be left bare. At 300 g a bowl this wide has real wall thickness, and the plain exterior is the metal itself rather than a coat over something else.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?

The flowers are laid on with a brush, one bowl at a time, so the count and the spacing of the blooms shift and the reds run warmer or cooler between pieces. The black ground and the gold scrolls stay the same.

How big is it really?

We have not measured it, so the page carries no width or height. That is deliberate. An estimate a couple of centimetres out is worse than an honest gap, particularly for a piece going onto a shelf that is already full. The weight above is measured. Ask and we will put a tape to this one.

Will it tarnish?

The bare outside will darken like any unlacquered brass. The painted inside will not, but do not attack it with lemon and salt to fix the outside, because the acid lifts the colour off the ground.

Can I serve food in it?

Keep it dry. The painted surface is not a food finish and sour or oily food sits directly against it, so use the bowl for potpourri, keys or a few wrapped sweets and wipe it out with a dry cloth.
